Clinchfield Railroad E-3 'Challenger'

When the locomotives that were assigned to the Rio Grande finished their service on that road, several of the L-97's went to the Clinchfield Railroad and became E-3 class Challengers. The most noticeable modification to these prototypes, again originally designed for the Union Pacific, was their conversion to a single-stack configuration which worked very well with the coal available on the Clinchfield.
