Chesapeake & Ohio K-4 / Virginian 'BA' Information

Even though the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad was late in bringing the 'Berkshire' class locomotives to it's roster, they quickly became favorites on the system. Having drawn on the designs used by the the Erie, NKP and Pere Marquette, the C&O was able to tailor their design, as best they could under the wartime circumstances, to more ideally suite it's needs. The 'Kanawhas' were extremely versatile in heading up coal drags, merchandise freight consists as well as passenger trains, including the 'George Washington' on occasion. A backhanded compliment paid to the 'Kanawhas' by an engineer was that the 'Alleghenys' were simply grown-up K-4s.

Our intent is to model versions delivered by the American Locomotive Company and Lima, these two companies shared the orders which totaled ninety units beginning in 1943. Seeing the success experienced by the C&O, the Virginian ordered five locomotives from Lima and designated them the 'BA' class, this version will also be included in our production. We look forward to having these models as stablemates for our previously produced Allegheny H-8 and AG models.
